Anyway, the cmake documentation is not very friendly, is it? Looks like it was written by Spartans. Sometimes, one or two more words would make things so much clear!
Being Spartan is not necessarily bad. :-)
I suggest updating the libtiff documentation to reflect what you learned and submitting a pull request for your updates. We can all benefit from useful things that others learn.
