right, TAR as a standalone is not critical. ZIP, on the other hand, is very susceptible to bitrot.

Regarding the suggestion to simply pack single TIFFs into tarballs: It doesn't solve the problem of the missing context, i.e. how the single files are related to each other. Surely you could build something there. I think it would be better to use established standards, such as the proposed OME-TIFF.

On the whole, I'm usually always for the simple solutions :)
