You can use the COMPRESSION_JPEG (old or new!) or any other COMPRESSION_xxx that will be supported by your other programs (not all!).
You need the libtiff source and for some compression codecs you have to add a #define xxx_SUPPORT in lib/tif_conf.h
Simply read all readme files and the .h comments as well.
The famous LZW compression is possible if you also download and install an extra .c/.h file package from http://www.libtiff.org but there are copyright and patent issues involved. BEWARE
