I am not sure about "emulation mode" since it seems to me that 32 bit apps on a 64-bit system is a common and well supported mode on Solaris (unlike some Linux). Regardless, libtiff 3.9.0beta built using the -m64 flag (with GCC 4.2.1) is working fine for me under x86-64 Solaris.
