EXIF helps reduce ambiguity about the image data (but since everything is marked as sRGB, Adobe RGB or untagged - it doesn't remove it).

Yes, but it also seems that if some software modifies the properties of the image and then re-writes the file with the original EXIF values, confusion is increased since some EXIF tags may now be incorrect for the updated image. Arrrgh! :-)

Yes, re-writing EXIF can be a problem (especially anyone suicidal enough to rewrite "maker notes").

But normally it still helps reduce (not remove) ambiguity.
