I just want to make the point that there are already many flavors of TIFF files that many standard "image viewer" applictions do not open. For example, old style JPEG, CIELab, JBIG compressed TIFF's, Tiled TIFF's, etc, etc. Whether we like it or not, that's the way TIFF is. Why change that philosophy now and create a new extension?

With these variations, an existing TIFF application (e.g. `tiffinfo') is still able to parse the file structure in order to obtain its salient information and retrieve standard tags, even if it is unable to actually comprehend the image data. The same can not be said for BigTIFF.
