Hi Andrew,

I would hope that the design of BigTIFF means that the messages are not simply "Cannot open. File is corrupt", but rather something like "file uses an unsupported compression algorithm".

As an example, ExifTool 6.92 will print the following error message when presented with a BigTIFF image: "Bad IFD0 directory".

This is because there are (unfortunately) TIFF-like files out there that use ID words other the standard TIFF 0x002a (42 decimal), so ExifTool can't veto a TIFF image based only on the TIFF ID word.

However, most tools will complain about the invalid ID, so with most tools I would expect an error more like "Not a valid TIFF image", or "Unknown image format".
