I think that it would be much more interesting to add JPEG2000 compression support. JPEG2000 supports both lossless and lossy compression.

JPEG2000 is a lot more than a compression scheme. But it doesn't have quite the flexibility that TIFF needs.

Yes, a more generalized wavelet transform might be useful -- IFF it really provides some advantages.
