Yes, but do they dream in big endian or little endian?

Using ASCII tags would make it readable regardless of byte order.

It is still not clear for me what do you (and others) mean as ASCII tags? Completely serialized metadata (including numerics and strings)? I should note that things like these bring up many problems with i18n/l10n: decimal delimiters, encodings etc.

I think that all numerics should be stored in binary form and UCS-2 encoding may be used for strings.
