- It was feared that older build systems like Visual C++ 6.0 might not work. I noted that this issue should not be a problem in theory because of the MSDN documentation. This point is probably now moot anyhow because people have enough trouble even finding MSVC 2005 these days.
Not moot, because VC6 was the last release that avoids "side by
side assembly hell", and the need to provide all the installables
that are needed for latter VC++ releases.
[And yes, SxS hell is real - I experienced it recently with a new copy of Nero burning software. Neither the Nero install nor any of Microsofts updates would fix it. It took some manual poking about in SxS to get Nero running again, and I certainly wouldn't want to put my users through that sort of thing.]
