I agree with Joris. I think the extension should remain unchanged.

I also agree with Joris, though not without misgivings. We will be making alot of pain for folks who don't understand why their .tif extentioned filed fail to open with TIFF reading applications.

Of course, I don't expect BigTIFF files to be too common for a while. I assume people will only emit BigTIFF files when have some reason to believe they have a large image to write - or for testing purposes of course.

I would add that while the standard can declare what the extension is, that won't necessarily have alot of impact on real world practice. Users and application decide out extensions. All we can do is encourage what we consider best practice.

The issue of whether to use a new mime type for BigTIFF is also open to interpretation I believe.
