From what I understand, OJPEG support was removed from libtiff because the TIFF v6.0 specification was falwed in its implementation of JPEG compression.

There was a posting a few days (weeks?) ago from someone that uses the IJG's libjpeg to decode old-style JPEG encoded TIFFs, after some trickery.

I haven't tried it out yet... On the list of things to do this weekend.
