Are you sure of ImageMagick? I read in the "depth" parameter that it understands only 8 or 16 bit colors. My impression is that colors just adjust/fixes/quantizes colortables.

No, it works for RGB images too.

I don't think netpbm is any longer maintained. Last version was from 1994.
