I will try imagemagick. I will also pursue with netpbm to see if there is any active development or maintainance.

Incidentally the lastest version is netpbm.1mar1994.p1, which are sources from 1994? This is the one I got.

No, it works for RGB images too.

I don't think netpbm is any longer maintained. Last version was from 1994.

Where you found so ancient package? The latest NetPBM may be downloaded here:
