which I ran yum update was an old,  rarely used Fedora12 box but the 
Rawhide repository had been enabled and it started pulling a ton of 
packages for Fedora16, which failed in most cases but broke other things 
silently in other cases. I've disabled rawhide on that box and will move 
to a newer box once I confirm everything works correctly.

Does the same hold true for RHEL 6?
