Most of the images I deal with are 32-bit floating point. Those Nikon TIFF images were just ones I was using to test some re-worked code.
In that case, you can use the predictors designed for floating point, as long as the reader supports the predictors. They are based on a draft document ("Adobe Photoshop® TIFF Technical Note 3") by Adobe's Chris Cox and still available from "http://chriscox.org/TIFFTN3d1.pdf".
I can readily change my defaults to use LZW instead of DEFLATE. I've been using deflate as it compresses the FP images better.
I found the information on the predictor tag, I "assume" that it may be worth setting for those big FP files.
Yes, if the predictor is correct for the data, then the compression will be better.
