Make sure you get some 12 bit/sample images from scientific cameras (microscopy uses them a lot).

Right. I am planning to provide 12 bit/sample grayscale images.

There is a user request outstanding for 12 bit/sample RGB images so I expect to (eventually) be able to produce these as well.
