We develop a large format printer Rip and have also considered this issue. It is more than just a TIFF issue but relates to file systems as well as file sizes are referred to by signed or unsigned long integers (32 bit). What is needed is some kind of Tag that allows one tiff to refer to an external file. For example a Tag that would say strips (or lines of data) are actually in another file.

Is there any standard out there that does this?
