I have finally decided to retain the same versioning system for the libtiff 3.7.0 as for the previous librarry versions. 3.7.0 should be absolutely binary compatible with the the 3.6.1.

Versioned symbols should be introduced in the next library release (4.x.x) which will be incompatible in many aspects, namely the 64-bit pointers.

Sounds sensible. If I do this on my own for 3.7.0 as a means to teach myself the process, would you like patches?

Pathes always welcome, but to switch to different versioning type we should change only one parameter in makefile. It is more interesting to simplify the process of version increasing and approach suggested by Bob (with the separate version.sh file sourced from the configure script) looks quite reasonable.
