Paul,

My guess would be that it works on files where the directory data is
before the 2GB mark.  If you are convinced there is more to it than this
then we can try and dig into it.  We would need to know various
details about operating system, config.log results (for libtiff) and so
forth.  Basically we would need to determine what underlying functions
are getting used for stdio.
