I am storing images from ten and twelve bit cameras using sixteen bits per sample.

Is there an accepted method of recording the original image depth?

Andrew,

I would imagine emitting a TIFFTAG_MAXSAMPLEVALUE of 1024 or 4096 would be the best way of indicating the real dynamic range of the original sensor.
