A slightly diferent point of view here. On UNIX boxes, the xv tool (GUI-based) and the netpbm package (command-line filters) are probably the easiest tools to install and use; I've never fully understood the enthusiasm for ImageMagick, which we also have -- it is often problematic to install cleanly, and does not offer the polished GUI of xv or the power and flexibility of pbm. We also have GIMP, but I've never viewed that as particularly well-suited as a format conversion tool...
