Thread1998.12.10 15:05 "Re: Future of the list & possible newsgroup?", by Charlie ButterfieldUpon returning from a long business trip I see that this list
is changing. Here is my two cents worth:
1) I find both libtiff and the list extremely useful. Many thanks
to Sam for supporting both for so long!
2) I personally prefer email to a newsgroup for two (related) reasons:
a) I don't have to remember to periodically check the newsgroup
b) My news server discards stuff after a couple of days
So I read every incoming message and save all but the true fluff
locally (permamently) for later recall, since (like most folks) I
only work on TIFF in bursts.
3) The biggest drawback to the recent operation of the list has been
the lack of any email archive and updated FAQ. This causes a lot of
repeated questions. If someone takes over the list, please try to
provide a permanent archive of either the email or newsgroup
postings.
In fact, I guess a newsgroup server with a long retention period
(say months) PLUS a permanent (i.e. multiple years) archive of
old posting would eliminate my preference for email.
4) Questions for Sam
a) When your approved successor for the list is selected, could
you please send out a notice to the group. There seems to be a
lot of confusing posting in this regard.
a) Are you also going to cease maintenance on libtiff? If so,
has anybody else that you feel is qualified stepped up to deal
with reported problems and suggested fixes. It would sure be
nice to have someone technically trustworthy and blessed by "the
Sam" to at least coordinate suggested fixes.
And, thanks again Sam for a really useful package!
