To further clarify the image size limitation, note that the limitation is due to the 32 bit size of the StripOffsets and TileOffsets tags. This limits the total size of the _compressed_ data to something over 4GB, although the uncompressed image data can be larger. Also, I say that the compressed data can be larger than 4GB because the 32 bit offset points to the beginning of each strip or tile, and therefore a file could be significantly larger than 4GB if a large strip or tile size is used.

This means that image sizes are not really "hard" limited to 4GB, but rather can be much larger depending on the compression ratio and strip/tile size.
