Somehow it produces weird code (double error) that is viewable on multipaged tiffs (only the first page) but it is not viewable with single page tifs. I apologize for the noise I created. BTW do you know of any good opensource unix color reduction utility for tiffs (command line preferably)?

You can try ImageMagick (search for the 'colors' command line option). And... what about upgrading the NetPBM? Anyway, don't forget to send a bugreport to its developers!
