i have some tiff files which were created by scanning under WinNT and written by windows imaging. i

1.tif: Warning, unknown field with tag 512 (0x200) ignored.

These are all for JPEG compression - the original stuff in TIFF 6 that doesn't work.

Sigh. I give up.

It looks like the Imaging for Windows product that Microsoft is giving away is STILL producing those bogus JPEG-in-TIFF files. I tried to convince them to change it a while back when it was still called the Wang Imaging for Windows product, but I guess they didn't listen. That is probably why we've had two such inquiries lately from different parts of the world. (See my recent response to "Old Style JPEG" on this list ).

Again, for anyone wishing to know why the original spec is a hideously bad design, read the TIFF technical note by Tom Lane:

Oh, well, I'm going to put on some nice classical guitar music and just get over this whole thing. Its too late, and life is simply too short.
